How to Get From Calgary to the Vancouver Cruise Terminal
Most Calgarians fly to YVR and ride the Canada Line SkyTrain downtown, and that is usually the cheapest and least stressful way to reach a ship at Canada Place. The one thing that really matters is doing it the day before you sail.
The fly-and-SkyTrain route, leg by leg
Here is the whole journey from a Calgary front door to the gangway.
- Get to YYC. Allow at least 90 minutes before a domestic departure, more on summer Fridays and long weekends. If you are leaving a car, see park and fly options at YYC.
- Fly to Vancouver. WestJet and Air Canada run frequent nonstops, and lower-cost carriers serve the route too. Flight time is about 90 minutes, and you gain an hour moving to Pacific time.
- Collect your bags at YVR. Follow signs to the Canada Line station, which sits between the domestic and international terminals.
- Ride the Canada Line to Waterfront. Trains run every few minutes and take about 26 minutes. At mid-2026 fares, expect roughly C$11–12 per adult, which includes the C$6.50 airport AddFare charged on trips leaving YVR. Tap a credit card or buy a ticket at the machine.
- Walk to Canada Place. Waterfront Station is a couple of minutes from the terminal entrance. Porters take checked bags at the curb.
- Check in and clear US preclearance. Alaska is a US state, so US border officers process you in the terminal before boarding. Have passports out (see passports for an Alaska cruise from Vancouver).
When a taxi makes more sense
The SkyTrain has no luggage racks and gets busy at rush hour. If you have big suitcases, a mobility issue, small children or a group of three or four, a taxi or rideshare for C$35–45 is easier and splits well. Every option, including private cars and hotel shuttles, is compared in YYC to Canada Place transfer options.
The alternatives to flying
- Drive. About 970 km, usually split over two days through Banff, Golden and Kamloops. Parking for a week adds up, so the numbers are worked through in driving from Calgary to an Alaska cruise.
- Rocky Mountaineer. Two days by daylight from Banff or Lake Louise with a night in Kamloops, ending in Vancouver. Book months ahead; it is a splurge, not a transfer.
- Coach. Private operators run the Calgary–Vancouver corridor as a long single day. It is the cheapest option but the slowest, and schedules change.
If you want to skip planes entirely, cruising from Vancouver without flying covers no-fly routes and itineraries.
Why the day before matters
A delayed morning flight is the most common way Albertans miss a Vancouver sailing. One weather hold or mechanical issue can push you past the boarding cut-off, and the ship won't wait. A hotel night costs a fraction of catching the ship in Alaska. The full risk math is in flying the day before vs same day, and hotel picks near the terminal are in where to stay the night before.

For one person, at recent prices:
- Return flights YYC–YVR: about C$150–350 if booked early
- Hotel the night before: about C$180–300 downtown in summer, shared
- Canada Line to Canada Place: about C$11–12 one way
- Back to YVR after the cruise: cheaper, since the AddFare only applies leaving the airport
A cruise package that bundles flights, a pre-night hotel and transfers can come in close to the DIY total and adds delay protection, so price both before booking. The full trip budget is in the real cost of a Calgary to Alaska cruise.

How far is Vancouver airport from the cruise terminal?
About 15 km. The Canada Line SkyTrain runs from YVR to Waterfront Station, beside Canada Place, in roughly 26 minutes. A taxi or rideshare takes 25–40 minutes depending on traffic and costs about C$35–45.
Can you take the train from Calgary to Vancouver for a cruise?
There is no regular passenger train from Calgary to Vancouver. The Rocky Mountaineer runs scenic two-day trips from Banff or Lake Louise with an overnight in Kamloops, but it is a holiday in itself and costs far more than flying.
How long before sailing should you get to Canada Place?
Arrive at your assigned check-in time, usually late morning or early afternoon, and no later than the line's cut-off, which is often 60–90 minutes before departure. US preclearance happens in the terminal, so allow time for it.
