Cruise Ship Transfers Explained: Airport, Hotel and Port Options
"Transfer" means something specific in cruise booking: the ride between airport or hotel and the ship, and whether the line arranges it or you do.
The cruise line transfer
Sold per person each way, usually $25–45 USD at recent pricing, on coaches that meet flights the line knows about. Advantages: the ship waits for its own buses, luggage is handled, and there's no navigation. Disadvantages: waiting for the coach to fill, and for a couple it often costs more than a taxi at close-in ports.
Taxi or rideshare
Vancouver's airport to Canada Place is about 30 minutes and roughly $40–50 CAD by taxi for the car, as covered in Calgary to Vancouver Cruise Terminal. Fort Lauderdale airport to Port Everglades is 10 minutes and under $20 USD. Miami airport to the port is 20 minutes and around $30–40. For two or more people at these ports, your own ride is cheaper and faster.
Hotel shuttles
Many pre-cruise hotels near ports run free or cheap shuttles to the terminal on sailing mornings — the cheapest option when you've flown in the day before, as recommended in Fly In the Day Before Your Cruise.
When to pay for the line's transfer
Flying in on sailing day — the one scenario where "the ship waits" is worth the premium. Travelling alone with heavy luggage. Unfamiliar foreign ports where the taxi system is uncertain.
Booking it
The line's transfers are bookable with the cruise or added later through whoever holds the booking, and need your flight details. Cruise-line air packages usually include them, as covered in Cruise Line Air vs Booking Your Own Flights.

How much is a cruise line airport transfer?
Typically $25–45 USD per person each way at major North American ports at recent pricing — more than a shared taxi for two at short-distance ports like Fort Lauderdale or Vancouver, less than one at distant ports.
Does the ship wait if the cruise line transfer is late?
Yes — the line's own transfers are tracked, and the ship holds for them; a late taxi or rideshare gets no such guarantee, which is the main argument for the line's transfer on a sailing-day flight.
