Royal Caribbean Dress Code: Formal Nights and What People Actually Wear
Royal Caribbean's dress code reads stricter than it's enforced — here's what each night looks like at the table.
The three codes
Casual nights: what you'd wear to a nice restaurant at home — no swimwear, tank tops or bare feet in the dining room. Smart casual: a step up — collared shirts, blouses, trousers or skirts. Formal: the line suggests suits, jackets or cocktail dresses; in reality most guests wear a collared shirt with trousers or a simple dress, and nobody is turned away for lacking a jacket.
How many formal nights
Two on a 7-night cruise, usually on sea days; one on 3–5 night sailings. Dates appear in the Cruise Compass the day before.
Where the code doesn't apply
The Windjammer buffet and casual venues serve the same food-quality tier every night in whatever you're wearing. Specialty restaurants ask for smart casual regardless of the night.
Packing for it
One step-up outfit per person covers both formal nights — nobody notices a repeat — plus two smart-casual combinations and daywear, as covered in Formal Nights on Cruises: What Do You Actually Wear.
Kids and teens
Children are expected to be neat rather than formal; a collared shirt or a dress is plenty.

How many formal nights are on a 7-night Royal Caribbean cruise?
Usually two, typically on sea days, listed in the daily Cruise Compass; 3–5 night cruises generally have one.
Can you wear jeans in Royal Caribbean's main dining room?
On casual and smart-casual nights, neat jeans are generally accepted; on formal nights the line asks for dressier attire, though enforcement is relaxed and a collared shirt with dark jeans rarely raises an eyebrow.
