Glacier Bay: the full-day national park
Glacier Bay is a national park and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Kluane in Yukon and Tatshenshini-Alsek in BC. Rangers board in the morning and narrate as the ship cruises roughly 100 kilometres up the bay, passing smaller glaciers before reaching Margerie and the rock-covered Grand Pacific at the head of Tarr Inlet.
Wildlife is a big part of the day: harbour seals on the ice, sea otters, mountain goats on the cliffs and sometimes brown bears on the shore. Entry is by permit: the park's 2019 contracts went to Holland America, Princess, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Viking, Seabourn and Cunard, with Holland America and Princess sailing in most often. Hubbard Glacier: the giant
Hubbard is often described as North America's largest tidewater glacier. Its face stretches around 10 kilometres across and rises higher than most cruise ships, and the ice starts its journey in the mountains of Yukon. Unusually, it has been advancing rather than retreating.
You'll see it mainly on one-way sailings between Vancouver and Whittier or Seward, which cross the Gulf of Alaska. Floating ice in the bay sometimes keeps ships several kilometres back, but the scale still impresses.
What about College Fjord?

Endicott Arm: the fjord drama
Endicott Arm is a long, narrow fjord lined with granite walls and waterfalls, ending at Dawes Glacier, an active calver. It usually falls on the morning before a Juneau call on round trips from Vancouver or Seattle. Icebergs drifting past the ship are part of the show.
Neighbouring Tracy Arm, with its twin Sawyer Glaciers, is similar but narrower, and it is visited more often by smaller ships.
How much should the glacier pick your cruise?
- Choose for Glacier Bay if you want the ranger-led, all-day experience. It is the one distinction worth paying for or changing dates to get.
- Choose a one-way for Hubbard and College Fjord if you want the most ice and are also open to a Denali land tour.
- Accept Endicott Arm happily if the rest of the sailing suits you. It is a superb day, and calving at Dawes can be excellent.
- Don't pay a premium to swap between Hubbard and Endicott alone. Pick on dates, ship and price.
