Canada Place Embarkation Day: A First-Timer Walkthrough
Embarkation at Canada Place takes most people 45–90 minutes from curb to ship. The one step that surprises first-timers is US preclearance: on an Alaska cruise you formally enter the United States in Vancouver, before you ever leave Canada.
Before you leave the hotel
Most of the work happens before you reach the terminal.
- Complete online check-in in the cruise line's app or website, and save or print your boarding pass. See online check-in documents for Canadians.
- Attach the line's luggage tags to every checked bag.
- Pack a carry-on with passports, medication, valuables, a charger and a warm layer. Checked bags can take until evening to reach your cabin.
- Finish or bin any fresh fruit, meat or snacks you won't want to explain at US preclearance.
Getting to the terminal
Canada Place sits on the downtown waterfront. If you stayed nearby, you can walk, and the hotel built on top of the terminal and those across the street are a few minutes away. From the airport, the Canada Line SkyTrain runs to Waterfront station, a short walk from the terminal. Taxis and pre-booked transfers drop off right at the entrance; compare options in YYC to Canada Place transfers, and if you're driving, read Vancouver cruise terminal parking first.
An hour-by-hour sample day
Times vary by line and ship. This is a typical day for a late-afternoon departure with a 12:30 check-in window.
- 9:30 a.m. Breakfast and hotel checkout. Leave tagged bags with the bell desk if you're walking over later.
- 12:15 p.m. Arrive at Canada Place. Porters at the curb take your tagged bags; a couple of dollars per bag is a usual tip.
- 12:20 p.m. Check-in. Show your passport and boarding pass, and have your photo taken for your cruise card or account.
- 12:35 p.m. Security screening, airport-style. Irons, most alcohol beyond the line's allowance and other banned items get pulled.
- 12:45 p.m. US preclearance. A US Customs and Border Protection officer checks your passport and asks a few questions.
- 1:10 p.m. Walk the gangway, scan your card and board.
- 1:15 p.m. Lunch at the buffet or a casual venue while cabins are being prepared.
- 2:00–3:00 p.m. Cabins usually open; complete the muster drill check-in.
- Late afternoon. Sail-away.
Where the queues form
The opening hour is busiest, as everyone who flew in early arrives at once. The last hour before all-aboard queues again, with less margin. The early-afternoon window is usually the calmest, and arriving well before your slot rarely saves time.
What US preclearance is like
It is the same process as at a US airport preclearance, just at a cruise terminal. You answer standard questions about your trip and what you're carrying, and once cleared you step ashore in Ketchikan or Juneau already admitted to the US. A valid passport is the simplest document to bring; the full rules are in do you need a passport for an Alaska cruise.
Your first hour aboard
Do three quick jobs before sail-away: find your muster station, book any specialty dining or shows you care about, and switch your phone to airplane mode or turn off roaming before the ship's network kicks in. What to do in your first hour aboard has the full list.

This is one of cruising's great departures. The ship pulls away from the pier, passes Stanley Park on the port (left) side and slides under the Lions Gate Bridge, with the North Shore mountains to starboard. Be on an open deck, not unpacking.
The rule that makes the whole day calm is simple: sleep in Vancouver the night before. Flying in the same morning is the main reason people arrive stressed or miss the ship; see where to stay the night before. When you return a week later, you clear Canadian customs at the same terminal, so keep receipts for anything bought in Alaska.

What time should you arrive at Canada Place for a cruise?
Your boarding pass assigns a window, so stick to it. The opening rush (roughly 10:30–11:30) and the final hour before all-aboard queue worst, while 12:30–2:00 typically flows fastest.
What questions does US preclearance ask cruise passengers?
Standard entry questions about the purpose of your trip, your itinerary and what you're carrying. Alaska-bound passengers formally enter the United States in Vancouver, so have passports and boarding documents ready and answer plainly.
Can you walk to Canada Place from the SkyTrain?
Yes. Waterfront station, the end of the Canada Line from the airport, is a short walk from the terminal. With rolling suitcases on level pavement it takes a few minutes.
